Officials at Germany-based Infineon said handing off manufacturing to Big Blue’s U.S. facilities will allow the Smart chip cards to be used in American military and security environments.
IBM and Infineon have been collaborating on Smart chip cards systems since 2007. The chips produced at IBM Burlington will include 130 nanometer embedded Flash technology on Infineon’s SLE 78 architecture, which features the company’s Integrity Guard security hardware.
IBM has secured a deal to manufacture security smart chips for use in passports, drivers licenses, personal I.D. cards and other sensitive applications.

There is a debate on smart cards for a variety of city services in Edmonton .The initial card may only be used for transit, then expanded to add other city services such as public libraries, parking and recreational facilities.
"One of the things I'm concerned about just with looking at it in a very narrow way on transit is that not everybody takes transit and how do we then incorporate the technology for all of our citizens, whatever they can use within the city, " Mandel said."So, I think you can do lots of things with a smart card."
A more detailed proposal, with cost breakdowns, is expected to be debated by council during the debate on whether smart cards should be serviced for much more fields of this city.
